To the Editor:
The following is a letter written to Bishop Daniel Jenky dated March 15:
It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this letter to you. I am most distraught regarding the events that have transpired in our town over the past two weeks regarding Rev. Jeff Windy.
From my perspective, Rev. Windy is the best thing to happen to our Catholic community in the last three and a half decades. Fortunately, we haven’t had any sex abuse scandals in our little town, but we have had priests that have caused embarrassment due to drunken rampages and great difficulties by not heeding the advice of those qualified to give monetary counsel. They were either quietly asked to retire or moved to other parishes.
But you have chosen to crucify Rev. Windy for what may I ask? As far as Rev. Windy’s past is concerned, it is no secret, we are aware and credit him for his honesty and his ability to learn from his experience and be a better priest because of it.
Because of your apparent lack of judgment in this matter, I am choosing to withhold my annual contribution to the diocesean appeal. And though I am speaking for myself, I have consulted with members of our three parishes who feel similarly and have pledged to follow suit. If Rev. Windy is reinstated, that will change.
