CORNELL — Aldine E. Monroe, 97, formerly of Cornell, passed away at 4:50 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018, at Heritage Health Normal.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will follow the luncheon at Rowe Cemetery in rural Pontiac at 2 p.m.
Aldine was born in rural Pontiac, a daughter of Arthur and Ellen (Hamreway) Shay. She married Harold Monroe on Oct. 28, 1939, in Rowe, Ill. He passed away May 30, 1995.
She is survived by her daughter, Pauline (Larry) Gourley, of Bloomington; two sons, Bill (Bonnie) Monroe, of Naples, Fla., and Terry (Julie) Monroe, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Greg (Colette) Gourley, Brian Monroe, Brenda (Andy) Bremanis, Brandy (Brian) Potter, and Brandon Boggio; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Orin, Burtin and Amer Shay; and two granddaughters.
Aldine graduated from Pontiac Township High School with the Class of 1938. She was the office secretary at Cornell High School for 25 years. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling and wintering in Arizona. She found pleasure working with ladies of the Cornell community, making comforters for Lutheran World Relief, and was a member of Pontiac Woman’s Club, Rooks Creek Home Extension and Cornell Senior Citizens Club.
Aldine’s family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and staffs of Advocate Hospice and Heritage Health Normal for their devoted care in the Legacy Unit.
