Weather leads to 2 I-80 crashes near Utica

A pair of crashes Monday morning on Interstate 80 near Utica are being blamed on weather conditions, according to Illinois State Police.

The first occurred at about 6:45 a.m., involving two vehicles. A 2018 Freightliner truck with a semitrailer operated by Phillip Reed, of Oak Forest, was traveling west on Interstate 80 near mile post 80 when he lost control of his vehicle, which began sliding. Reed told police his vehicle struck a passenger vehicle in the right lane. He said the vehicle initially pulled to the shoulder, then left the scene. Reed couldn’t provide any identifying information on the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

A second crash, this time involving one vehicle, occurred about 30 minutes later and about a half mile east. A 2003 Chevrolet Trail Blazer operated by Lorenzo Ramirez, of Kewanee, was traveling east when he lost control of his vehicle due to slick conditions. Police said Ramirez’s vehicle entered the median and struck a guardrail. The vehicle came to rest in the center median. Ramirez refused treatment from EMS at the scene, according to state police.

Possible citations are pending in both cases, police said.
