Joliet Junior College freshman and former Seneca High School standout pitcher Rachel Sangston put together a solid week for the Wolves. Sangston first earned a win after scattering seven hits in five innings while fanning one in JJC's 14-2 victory over Harper College. She then followed that with a five-inning, three-strikeout no-hitter against Milwaukee Area Technical School. In the no-no, Sangston did allow an earned run, but her team scored 25 runs to run away with the triumph. The Wolves are 23-13 and have currently won three straight games.
Olivia Ruff (Jr., Woodland) helped Illinois Wesleyan University capture the title of their IWU Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling at Normal's Ironwood Golf Course over the weekend. Ruff carded scores of 78 and 82 to finish with a 160, putting her in a tie for 12th place individually for the 16-team event.
Mikayla Greenwood (Sr., Streator) had a base hit in Illinois College's 6-1 win over Monmouth College on Saturday. Greenwood now has eight hits, including a pair of doubles, on the season for the Lady Blues (11-7).
Lake Land College is currently 33-14 overall and 21-3 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. Delanie Johnson (Fr., Streator) is hitting .391 with 14 doubles, six home runs, seven stolen bases and a team-leading 53 RBIs. Rachael Quaritsch (Fr., Flanagan-Cornell) is batting .385 with four doubles, a pair of triples and 11 RBIs. Pitcher Samantha Forrest (Fr., La Salle-Peru) in nine appearances and 20 innings pitched has struck out seven and has an ERA of 3.85.
Upper Iowa University pitcher Jaclyn Thompson (Jr., Serena) threw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while fanning four in the Peacocks' (16-16) win over Concordia-St. Paul. She then suffered the tough-luck loss against Minnesota Duluth on an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth after allowing just three hits and striking out 10. On the season, Thompson is 5-7 in 15 appearances (13 starts, seven complete games) with 69 strikeouts in 77 innings, and opponents are hitting just .225 against her.
West Virginia Tech (13-25) swept a doubleheader from Bluefield State College over the weekend. Skylar Connelly (Jr., Ottawa) went 3-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and a stolen base in a 10-2 opening-game victory. She then went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI in a 14-1 triumph in the second game. Connelly is currently batting .352 with nine doubles, 10 stolen bases and 20 RBIs.
Pitcher Chelsea Fogarty (So., Ottawa) earned her fifth win of the season for Clarke University (10-20) after striking out four in five innings against William Penn University in the first game of a doubleheader. Fogarty is 5-8 with a 3.79 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings pitched. She has made 15 appearances, 13 starts and 10 complete games for the Pride.
Pitcher Emily Despain (So., Ottawa) had a win and a save in Elmhurst College's doubleheader sweep of Trinity Christian. Despain scattered five hits in seven innings in the opener, allowing no earned runs and fanning five. She then tossed 3 1/3 scoreless frames, giving up just two hits and striking out a pair, in the afternoon cap to seal the win. Despain is now 5-6 in 13 appearances (10 starts, seven complete games) for the Bluejays with an ERA of 2.10 and 51 strikeouts in 70 innings of work. Pitcher Bailee Krantz (So., Somonauk) has struck out 22 in 38 1/3 innings for EC (8-16, 1-7 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin).
Rockford University (8-10) split a recent doubleheader with Milwaukee School of Engineering with Bryce Hinkelman (Sr., Marquette) driving in a run in the Regents' 5-3 win in the second game. Hinkelman is batting .377 with four doubles, three home runs and 17 RBIs, while pitcher Dalton Morris (Sr., Marquette) has fanned 16 in 16 innings on the hill.
Karter Lowery (Fr., Ottawa) smacked a double, home run and drove in three runs to help Parkland College (30-5) to a 17-1 victory over Spoon River. Lowery is hitting .316 with two doubles, two triples and seven RBIs for the Cobras, who are ranked No. 8 in the latest NJCAA Division II poll.
Millikin University's Seth Coffey (Sr., Ottawa) had four hits, including a double, in the Big Blue's wins over Wheaton and North Park and is now batting .297 for the season with four doubles, a home run and seven RBIs. Pitcher Brandon Viken (Jr., Seneca) has pitched in four games and currently has an ERA of 2.25 with two strikeouts in four innings.
