ON CAMPUS: A trio of locals going to NJCAA softball national tournament

The Lake Land College softball team swept the final two games, 5-0 and 4-1 over Wabash Valley, of the Region 24 Tournament to advance to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in St. George, Utah. The No. 14-seeded Lakers open at nationals by playing No. 3 Temple College on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

Delanie Johnson (Fr., Streator) is hitting .425 with 25 doubles, eight home runs and a team-leading 66 RBIs for LLC (48-16). Rachael Quaritsch (Fr., Flanagan-Cornell) is batting .310 with four doubles, three triples and 16 RBIs, while pitcher Samantha Forrest (Fr., La Salle-Peru), who is 3-1 with a save, has 15 strikeouts in 35 innings and an ERA of 4.00.

Elmhurst College (16-19) finished its season with a 5-1 victory over the University of Chicago. Bailee Krantz (So., Somonauk) allowed seven hits and an earned run in the complete-game triumph for the Bluejays, and finished the season with 26 strikeouts in 63 innings over 16 appearances. Emily Despain (So., Ottawa) ​ended the year 10-7, with 10 complete games in 17 starts and an ERA of 2.53 while fanning 65 in 108 innings pitched.

​Illinois College fell in the Midwest Conference Tournament championship game to close the season 25-13. Mikayla Greenwood (Sr., Streator) ended the season appearing in 35 games, including 34 starts, with 17 hits (four doubles) and nine RBIs.

Joliet Junior College fell to Rock Valley College 10-7 in the championship game of the NJCAA Division III Region 4 Tournament to end the season 33-20. Pitcher Rachel Sangston (Fr., Seneca) finished the year 16-6 with a save and an ERA of 4.11. Sangston had 17 complete games in 20 starts and fanned 47 in 143 innings of work.

West Virginia Tech (22-29) saw its season come to an end with a 7-3 loss to Cincinnati Christian University at the River States Conference Tournament. The Golden Bears closed the year winning 12 of their last 16 games. Skylar Connelly (Jr., Ottawa) finished the season batting .352 with 12 doubles, a triples and 12 stolen bases, while leading the club with 26 RBIs.

Clarke University lost 4-3 to Mount Mercy University at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships to finished the season at 20-31. Chelsea Fogarty (So., Ottawa) ended the season 4-8 with a 3.57 ERA in 14 games (12 starts, nine complete games). She recorded 35 strike outs in 70 innings in the circle.

The University of Toledo (34-21) was eliminated by Ball State 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference, but received an invitation to the National Invitational Championships and will play at Eastern Kentucky on Thursday. Maggie McGurk (Fr., Streator) has made 12 appearances, including two starts, this season for the Rockets and is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA, with nine strikeouts over 17 2/3 innings.


Parkland College, currently ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA DII polls, finished the regular season 42-13-1 and will host Spoon River College on Thursday to begin the Region 24 Tournament. Trystin Raikes (RS-So., Marquette) is hitting .335 for the Cobras and leads the team with 13 home runs and 58 RBIs. Pitcher Evan Snyder (So., Marquette) has made 10 appearances and has recorded 29 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings with an ERA of 2.08.
