PHOTO: Barred owl spotted in Streator yard

A fledgling barred owl was found in Jane Berry's Streator neighborhood on North Park Street last week. Berry first spotted the owlet on her fence, where she watched it for about an hour before it got spooked. "(The owlet) hopped down from the fence and hopped west across the alley to my neighbor's tree and climbed up using his talons. He can't fly yet," Berry wrote when she submitted the photo. Save Our American Raptors, an organization that rescues and rehabilitates raptors and educates the public about the birds, reports owlets found outside of nests generally are not orphaned. Adult owls continue to care for their young on the ground.
