Streator High School students were awarded more than $200,000 in 88 scholarships at the 38th annual awards banquet May 9 at the Streator High School Commons.

The Streator Lions Club helped with food service at the banquet.

At the conclusion of the ceremony Superintendent Matt Seaton imparted some “words of wisdom” to the soon-to-be graduates. He stressed being nice, courteous, helpful and professional in their future endeavors. He also stressed the importance of remembering where they came from, to be appreciative of the generosity of those who established and support the scholarships students received and to consider coming back and giving back to the community from which they came.

Members of the Streator High School Board of Education, the Streator High School Educational Foundation and high school administration were acknowledged prior to the ceremony. Principal Amy Jo Mascal, along with Brad Brittin served as mistress and master of ceremonies.

This year 10 students took home more than $6,000 to assist them in continuing their education.

A significant highlight of the evening was the awarding of the third Richard J. Berry Returning Graduate Award to 2013 Streator Township High School alum Kristina McCormick.

Established by Rebecca Berry to honor her late husband, the award, worth $10,000, is given to a Streator High graduate choosing to return to Streator to live and work.

McCormick was awarded the Golden Apple scholarship for teacher education training in 2013 and went on to Illinois State University where she studied Spanish education with a minor in teaching English to speakers of other languages.

She studied abroad in Granada, Spain for five months and graduated Summa Cum Laude from ISU in December 2016. She taught in Toulon for one semester before moving back to Streator in May 2017. She has not only returned to her hometown to live and work, but to her alma mater, Streator Township High School, where she teaches Spanish.

The returning Streator High School Graduate award honors Richard J. Berry, a 1970 Streator High graduate. Berry attended Vanderbilt University, graduating in 1974. He then graduated law school from Notre Dame University in 1977. He returned to Streator, where he was born and raised, to serve as partner and trial attorney in the law firm of Myers, Berry, O’Connor & Kuzma, Ltd. He was very involved in the Streator community and served as co-founder and tournament director of the City Golf Championships Tournament from 1980 to 2006. Tragically, Berry died in a car accident on Dec. 16, 2009. Past returning graduate award winners include Theresa Solon and Logan Pflibsen.

Berry has established not only the Returning Graduate Award at Streator, but also a scholarship for a senior in the amount of $5,000 given to one graduating student each year. Senior Hanna Paton received this award, the eighth year the scholarship has been given.

During the scholarship presentations, welding students Bryan Alvarado and Roberto Rivera each received a special gift of welding equipment provided by Robert Dieken. This was in addition to these students being awarded the Bulldog Welding Scholarship.

Seniors receiving awards worth $6,000 and up were: Emma Harris, Samantha Hildago, Wes Jolly, Ashley McCurdy, Kyra Olesen, Hanna Paton, Emily Roach, Jessica Schaumberg, Mitchell Vickers and Madison Wachowski.
