MARSEILLES — Marie Pomatto Chase, 96, passed away July 8 at her daughter’s home in North Carolina.
Marie was born July 5, 1922, in Marseilles, to John and Effie Pomatto.
She is survived by a daughter, Donna Turnbaugh, and husband, Roy, of Weaverville, N.C.; son, Michael Chase, and Vicki Nicholson, of Marseilles; two grandsons, Andrew Turnbaugh, of Libertyville, and Peter Turnbaugh, of San Francisco; and four great-granddaughters, Isabella, Hazel, Vivienne and Imogen.
She was predeceased by her parents; and brother, Louis Pomatto.
Marie graduated as valedictorian of the Marseilles High School Class of 1940 and earned a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois in 1944.
She proudly served in the Navy Waves from 1944 to 1946, and was the first woman from La Salle County to enlist.
Marie was a dedicated teacher in the Marseilles Public Schools from 1948 to 1951 and from 1958 to 1977. She started the first public school kindergarten program in Marseilles.
Interment will occur at a future date at Arlington National Cemetery.
