To the Editor:
Your city can be very proud of how it handled the gas leak emergency on Tuesday morning. The Life Long Learners from Waubonsee Community College had discussed the Radium Girls book and scheduled a bus trip to Utica and Ottawa on July 31. The Cheese Shop caterer called early to alert us of the emergency but everyone handled this so well.
We did travel around streets that were blocked but people were patient and orderly. We managed to pick up our food order at the restaurant and ate at the Scouting museum. We were joined by Heinz Suppan who was our local guide escorting the group to the historic sites mentioned in the Radium Girls book. He did a masterful job providing local color. A deluge prevented us from disembarking at the Radium Girl statue but we viewed her from the window. You can be proud of dealing with a crisis and handling a bus of visitors in the midst of it.
