Margaret R. Gill



STREATOR — Margaret R. Gill, 85, of Independence, Mo., formerly of Streator, passed away July 14 in Independence.

A Celebration of Margaret’s Life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Elias Funeral Home. Pastor Paul Kissling will officiate and also conduct graveside services in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Elias Funeral Home.

She was born Oct. 8, 1932, in Streator, the daughter of Willard F. and Ethel M. (Wichman) Schaefer. She married Lester W. Gill in June 1956; he passed away in June 1987.

She is survived by her son, Jonathan L. (Dona) Gill, of Blue Springs, Mo.; and grandchildren, Megan Gill, of Chicago, and Spencer Gill, of Blue Springs.

Margaret’s mother taught her to play the piano at the age of 4 and she loved being involved with music the rest of her life. She attended Mud Lane School in rural Streator and graduated from Streator High School, Class of 1950. She graduated from Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington in 1954 with high honors.

She taught vocal music in Illinois public schools from 1954 to 1982; she then worked at Beulah Land Christian Home as activity coordinator from 1982 to 2000 and then became music director at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church from 2000 to 2006. In 2010, Margaret moved to Independence, Mo., to be near her family.
