YSB doesn't only serve kids

Counseling services extend to adults, too

With a name like Youth Service Bureau of Illinois Valley, you might not think of adults benefiting from its services.

But adults receive counseling at YSB — many do.

Lisa Gustafson, who is the treatment/counseling director at YSB in Ottawa, said about 47 percent of YSB’s Solutions Counseling’s clients are adults.

Sometimes the counseling is related to parenting interventions to use with the client’s young or adolescent children, but often times it is to manage their own mental health with whatever circumstances are happening in their life, she said.

YSB also does a lot of couples counseling to address marital issues. They also have many adult clients seeking counseling for anxiety and depression symptoms and adults who seek counseling for a significant loss or other traumatic event in their life.

“Our goal is to help them find their voice during these changes in their life and embrace the journey,” Gustafson said. “It is important for everyone to feel like they have a voice to share their experience, the impact it is having on their life and be able to ask for help along the journey.”

Solutions Counseling offers outpatient and mental health therapy by professionals with masters degrees and licensed therapists training in child and family-centered intervention.

Gustafson said there is demand for counseling services in the area for children and adults, and just this month YSB expanded its counseling services with the addition of Nancy Carper, who will see patients out of the La Salle and Princeton offices. YSB employs five clinicians and offers counseling in Ottawa and Streator and throughout Northern Illinois.

Carper has worked in the counseling field for 26 years and has been a licensed clinical professional counselor in Illinois for more than 20 years. She serves children, adolescents, adults, couple and families. She uses a blend of cognitive behavioral, holistic, psycho-educations, psychotherapy and behavioral therapy interventions. She is specially trained in Level 2 Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing, partner abuse, domestic and sexual assault interventions and crisis assessment consultation.

Solutions Counseling treats anxiety, depression, loss, teen issues, divorce, issues around blended families, abuse and neglect, anger management and more. Services include individual, marital and family counseling. For more information, call 815-431-3051.
