To the Editor:
The city of Streator’s rental program is going to make a lot of homeless people. Population of Streator is 13,000 and at 67 percent lives below the federal poverty line and 47.6 are children.
They cannot afford any higher rent. All the program is going to do is make money for the city. Any tenant that thinks there’s a violation or safety hazard can invite in the Fire Chief or the code officer in their place of rental. You don’t need a rental program.
The senior citizens on fixed incomes can’t afford any more. Single mothers, the working man, can’t. The city of La Salle did this and are about broke. Why does the city of Streator think it’s going to come out different for them?
The tenants should be outraged. They are the ones that are going to pay the bill. The landlords are going to go section 8. So the city can’t inspect them. The city is thinking revenue. Remember this on election day. We are a poor community. Just like the other communities. If it wasn’t for food stamps and the food pantry most of us would starve. ... We’re good people and we work hard. Stay out of our pocket.
