LETTER: How to stop the shutdown

To the Editor:

This federal shutdown has gone on too long. Many people in the federal government are living paycheck to paycheck.

The Republican senators refuse to OK the spending bill so hundreds of thousands (of) federal employees can go back to work but will OK the salary pay raise for the White House staff which includes Trump spokesperson Sarah Sanders and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

I bet our legislators are getting paid even though the working stiffs — those people who are actually running the government — are working without pay.

It is for this reason, if this shutdown is not settled by the time this article is published, the federal union members should get together and have either a one-day or several-day walkout to support their federal employees who are working without pay or not working at all. If Trump and the Republican senators want to play games over this stupid wall let them but in the meantime the federal union employees will also play their own games by shutting down the ENTIRE federal government. This means no TSA screening at airports — so terrorists can come into the country unnoticed. Air traffic controllers wouldn’t be directing planes so planes would be grounded. Amtrak wouldn’t run — commuters would need to find another way to work. Federal offices like Social Security would be closed and seniors wouldn’t get their Social Security check because there is no one in the Social Security office to print them. Our federal prisons would have less prisoners because there would be no guards watching over them.

So federal union leaders and your members do you job. Organize a strike in support of your fellow employees who are suffering for lack of work.

I’m not a fan of unions striking, but as I see it a strike will be the only way the Republican senators will take notice of the problem Trump has caused by not listening to reason.
