Seneca road project on state's 'fast track'

Dip on Main Street a safety concern

Seneca Commissioner Jeff Olson said the village is on the Illinois Department of Transportation's "fast track" to getting a dip in the road on the east side of the BP Gas station on the corner of Main Street and U.S. 6 repaired.

The village has hot-patched the dip several time but the problem has remained.

“Hot patching is not a solution,” Olson said. “All that's done is put a band-aid on what's a serious safety issue. For quite a while, we've watched drivers swerve into northbound traffic to avoid the dip and that's our big safety concern.”

Olson advised the board the village has received word from the state for road milling from the railroad tracks on Main Street north to U.S. 6. The project will involve completely digging up the road's surface "to exactly discover what's causing the problem."

Olson said after years of making phone calls requesting IDOT to make the necessary repair, Olson credited Police Chief George Lamboley and Village Engineer Casey McCollum with finally getting the state's attention.

“We've been trying to get the Illinois Department of Transportation to solve this problem for quite a while with no success,” Olson said. “So I asked Casey how we could get IDOT to respond and he said the village should write a letter to IDOT. Apparently letters hold more weight than a lot of phone calls. Chief Lamboley wrote a letter about four to five months ago and now IDOT has responded, telling us we're on the 'fast track' to getting the road fixed.”

Olson said that while there was no guarantee of when the project would begin, once started, it would take “two to three weeks at the most.”
