AREA ROUNDUP: Lady Indians cap off perfect regular season

Ottawa dance brings home firsts from IDTA State

SANDWICH — The Sandwich Lady Indians capped off a perfect regular season Saturday afternoon by beating the Stillman Valley Cardinals 53-35 in a nonconference game.

Sandwich (30-0) was up 25-7 after one quarter, 35-18 at the half and 45-25 through three periods of play.

"I could not be more proud of any team I have coached since I started doing this in 1990," Lady Indians coach Chris Johnson said. "Congratulations on everything (the girls) have accomplished this season — so far.

"The postseason is a new season, and we have to be ready to go in practice on Monday now."

Jaylynn Vana scored 15 points to lead the Lady Indians. Josie Ness added a dozen points.

Ottawa takes top IDTA honors

At Springfield, Ottawa's Pirate Poms claimed first place in the Jazz AAA Division as well as the overall AAA Grand Championship at the 2019 Illinois Drill Team Association (IDTA) State Finals held at the Bank of Springfield Center.

The team last month also qualified for IHSA State in its second year of competition.

Sandwich 65, Stillman Valley 45

At Sandwich, Jimmy Braddish scored 40 points — which included a school-record-tying eight 3-pointers — to lead the Indians (16-8) to the nonconference win over the Cardinals.

Somonauk 69, Midland 57

At Somonauk, the Bobcats defeated the Timberwolves in a nonconference game.

Somonauk (13-12) led 22-13 after one quarter, 47-30 at the half and 59-36 through three periods.

Liam Roberts scored 19 points to lead the Bobcats. Cameron Davis added 17 points. Nolan Wegener grabbed eight rebounds. Clifford Ciesielczyk dished out nine assists.

Lady Pirate, Lady Bulldogs take part in sectional

An Ottawa Lady Pirate and a pair of Streator Lady Bulldogs took part in the Minooka Sectional at Echo Lanes in Morris.

Ottawa's McKenzie Lewis had a 1,070 six-game series, which included games of 193 and 191 (twice).

Streator's Felicity Kruger had a 1,043 six-game series, which included games of 189, 187 and 173. Hallie Ligori had an 828 series, which included a 174 game.

JUCO men's basketball

Olive-Harvey 104, IVCC 97

At Chicago, the Eagles were defeated by Olive-Harvey College in a nonconference game.

For IVCC, Joe LaShonse (26) and Colby Robbins (21) topped 20 points. Kahlil Brummett (15 points), Connor Wilson (11) and Christian Walker (10) were in double figures as well.

Ottawa 53, La Salle-Peru 35

At A.J. Sellett Memorial Gym, the Corsairs led 33-10 at halftime and 39-27 through three periods in their Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference West Division victory over the host Incas.

Anthony Cooper led Ottawa with a game-high 19 points — including five 3-pointers — and three assists. Zach Vogel added 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting and five rebounds. Levi Sholders posted eight points, five assists and a pair of steals. Jack Scheri paced La Salle-Peru with 16 points, including four triples, and seven rebounds.

Lady Vikings win NIB 12 Tourney

The Ottawa Lady Vikings claimed the title of the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Tournament with wins over La Salle-Peru (43-10) and Kaneland (40-26) at Kingman Gym.

Against L-P, Molly Buscher scored nine points to lead Ottawa and Brooke Waddell added eight. Versus Kaneland, Olivia Long scored 10 points to lead Ottawa and Gabi Krueger added eight.

The Lady Vikings finished their season with a 20-1 record.
