Streator within a game of .500 after besting Bedans

Ford scores 21, Benning 20 for surging Bulldogs

SPRING VALLEY — On January 4, the Streator boys basketball team made the long, cold drive home after suffering a 61-26 loss at the hands of Interstate Eight rival Lisle and seeing their record tumble to 3-10.

Something needed to turn around and turn around quick for the Bulldogs.

“This group has really fought hard,” said SHS coach Beau Doty. “Our season could have gone a lot of ways after that Lisle loss. I remember riding that cold bus home at 3-10 after getting it handed to us by 35 points. Now to be there and have an opportunity to go home against a very good Seneca team with a chance to get to the .500 mark says a lot about them.

"Our kids have made the mental effort in practice to get better and to understand how hard we have to compete to get better on a daily basis to beat good teams.”

On their next outing, the 'Dogs triumphed at La Salle-Peru. That started a four-game winning streak for SHS until it dropped a decision to I-8 Conference Tournament top seed Westmont on January 26.

Since the loss to Lisle, the Bulldogs have won seven of their last eight games, including Saturday night's 69-61 win over the St. Bede Bruins here at Abbott Vincent Gymnasium in Spring Valley.

Sophomore guard Amarion Ford led the visitors with a career-high 21 points, and junior Mason Benning added 20. Ford and Benning combined for 41 of SHS's 69 points and were 14 of 31 combined from the floor (45 percent).

“There were a lot of gaps for us in the first half,” Ford said after the game. “We were shooting well, and we were able to attack those gaps and get to the line.”

The two teams combined for 42 fouls, and SHS knocked down 22 of its 32 attempts (69 percent), while SBA was 9 of 14 (64 percent).

Streator (10-11) will try to reach the .500 mark when it hosts Seneca at Pops Dale Gymnasium on Tuesday.

St. Bede (2-22) was like a pesky little brother all night against the Bulldogs.

The Bruins took a 17-16 lead after one quarter of play and led 22-19 on a Luke Sanchez layup with 5:16 left to go until halftime. Streator then ripped off the next six points to force SBA to call a timeout at the 3:42 mark trailing 25-22.

Ford got the rally going when he hit two free throws. Benning and Jimmy Treadway each added layups. Coming out of the timeout, the Bulldogs scored another eight points on a Ford trey, two Grant Mascal charity tosses, a Mason Benning free throw and a Carter Spears layup, and Streator led 33-22.

The Bruins’ Max Manning halted the 14-0 Bulldogs surge with a 3-point basket at the 41-second mark to make it 33-25.

Ford scored 12 of his 21 points in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 35-26 halftime lead, and Benning had 11 of his 20 points in the second half to close the game out.

The ‘Dogs took a 48-36 lead into the final quarter and saw the home team outscore them 25-21, but Streator came home with an eight-point win. The Bulldogs were able to survive three fourth-quarter 3-point field goals from Paul Hart (team-high 20 points), Sanchez (15 points) and Ben Bernabei (13 points).

Streator held a 29-24 advantage on the glass with Mascal hauling down a team-high eight rebounds, while Sanchez had seven caroms for the Bruins.

For the night, Streator shot 22 of 52 (42 percent) from the floor, while St. Bede was 23 of 51 (45 percent).
