OSF HealthCare is expanding its cancer care services by bringing in additional specialists and advanced treatment options, according to a news release from the medical group.
Dr. Shylendra Sreenivasappa — who goes by Dr. Sreeni for short — is a hematology/oncology specialist who will be working at OSF St. Paul Medical Center in Mendota, along with Registered Nurse Megan Oppliger, an oncology nurse who specializes in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Anthony Zalduendo, a radiation oncologist, will join OSF St. Elizabeth in Ottawa. Zalduendo specializes in radiation treatment and cares for conditions of breast and lung cancer.
“Dr. Zalduendo was instrumental in bringing advanced technology to the region including a new Discovery IQ PET/CT scanner that was introduced in May as part of the hospital’s radiation oncology department,” said a June 7 news release.
The PET/CT scanner will use arc therapy, allowing for faster treatments than a conventional fixed beam of radiation, and through automation, it will limit the steps involved in imaging, positioning and treatment.
“Our patients can expect first-rate cancer care involving less toxicity by precisely localizing the tumor to provide a treatment that is easier to tolerate,” Zalduendo said in the news release.
The system also will provide real-time imaging and allow the therapy team to more accurately direct doses.
