Construction of Ottawa's new River Rescue building remains on schedule

Donations still being sought

Construction of Ottawa's new River Rescue Squad building remains on schedule and should be open in November.

Vice President Brian Brenbarger updated The Times on Monday saying the construction process has been going well and they're still accepting donations.

"It's going really well. They haven't run into any major problems yet thankfully. They're pretty much right on track if not a little ahead," Brenbarger said.

Construction began on a new location at 701 Hitt St. in May on the south side of the Illinois River after years of planning and due to flooding concerns at their current location on Albin Stevens Drive. The new building and location are also expected to increase response times and host CPR and other training sessions.

The 5,000-square-foot facility is estimated to cost around $800,000 with around $150,000 to $200,000 being put toward it thus far including demolition.

Brenbarger said donation events, such as their car show and Fun Drive have generated around $11,000.

"We're appreciative of all the support we've received," Brenbarger said.

He said donors should be on the lookout for future cookout events including one planned for Labor Day weekend at the Starved Rock Yacht Club and a quarter auction on Saturday, Nov. 9, in their new building.

The half-acre property where the new building is located was donated to the squad by Troy and Mike Feece of Feece Oil Co.

The 20-member squad has been conducting water-related rescues since 1957 and generally answers emergency calls in a 15-mile radius.

Brenbarger said those looking to donate can send donations to P.O. Box 234 in Ottawa or reach out via their Facebook page at fb.com/Ottawa-River-Rescue-330852066659.

Additional information on their upcoming events can also be found on their Facebook page.
