The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Sommerville, will present Tchaikovsky’s ballet "The Nutcracker" twice in December.

The ballet will be staged at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, in Matthiessen Auditorium at La Salle-Peru High School. Dancers from Dance Center in La Salle, Gray’s School of Dance in Ottawa and Ottawa Dance Academy will perform, in addition to The Latin Mass Choir of the Illinois Valley and voice students of Kori Suarez.

"The Nutcracker" ballet performances are offered by the IVSO every two years with local dancers and musicians taking the stage.

The story of "The Nutcracker" invites viewers into a child’s world filled with anticipation. It is a story of magic and transformation that shows things are not always as they seem, according to an IVSO news release.

First performed on Dec. 18, 1892, in St. Petersburg, Russia, "The Nutcracker" has been a Christmastime classic performed throughout the world.

Sponsors for the ballet are the Spring Valley City Bank and Eureka Savings Bank. Season sponsors are Ottawa Radio and Regional Media.

Reserved seating prices are $20 for adults and $5 for students through high school as well as for college students with an ID. For tickets, send a check payable to Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra and a self-addressed stamped envelope to: IVSO Nutcracker, c/o Larry Ault, 1300 Briarcrest Drive, Ottawa IL 61350. Specify performance date, main floor or balcony and how many adult or child tickets. Ticket orders received after Friday, Dec. 6, will be held at the door.
