COAL CITY — The Serena Huskers captured their first victory of the young season Saturday, leading early and throughout a 70-54 decision over Peotone in the seventh-place game of the Coal City/Manteno Tip-Off Tournament.
Spearheading Serena — which led by seven at the close of one quarter and 10 heading into the fourth — were Tony Pusateri with a 32-point effort and Ben Shugrue with 22 points scored. Jack Rogers added nine points for the Huskers (1-3).
Seneca 69, Mendota 32
At the Seneca Turkey Tournament, the host Fighting Irish built off a strong showing in a loss to eventual runner-up Somonauk the night before by dominating their seventh-place contest with the Trojans.
Seneca (1-3) led 14-7 after one quarter, 39-16 at halftime and 60-21 heading into the final period. Ben Krause (14 points), Tommy Cahill (nine), Noah Quigley (eight), Cody Carey (eight) and AJ Stiegler (seven points) led a balanced Seneca attack.
Alexis Quintana (13 points) paced Mendota.
Belvidere 36, Sandwich 35
At Sycamore, the Indians (0-4) saw a last-second shot miss the mark to fall in the Strombom Holiday Tournament's seventh-place contest.
Rock Falls 60, Ottawa 25
At Rock Falls, the Lady Pirates slipped to 3-2 on the season with the nonconference defeat at the hands of their former NCIC foes.
Sandwich 35, Mendota 31
At Sandwich, the host Lady Indians knocked off the visiting Lady Trojans in a Saturday contest that was tied 22-22 heading to the fourth quarter.
"Our defense is what won us the game," said Lady Indians coach Chris Johnson. "We cannot afford to shoot like we did in the games coming up ... (but) we did attempt 25 free throws and shot 64& from the line. Those are two goals that we met ... that will consistently help us win close games like this."
Claire Roberts with nine points, Ava Knepper with eight and Jaylynn Vana with seven points led the Sandwich attack.
Kruger rolls 1,017 for Streator
At Plainfield Lanes, Felicity Kruger marked a 1,017 series (high games of 193, 177, 171, 170) to lead the Streator Bowlin' Lady Bulldogs in the Plainfield Central Invite. Hallie Ligori added a 952 series (198, 179), with additional high games coming courtesy of Gabby Pickens (173, 172).
Jakupcak paces Bowlin' Bulldogs
At Town and Country Lanes, Adam Jakupcak rolled a 1,107 series (212, 184, 180, 180 high games) to lead the way for the Streator High boys in the Plainfield South Invitational.
Two fellow underclassmen were close behind — Brady Grabowski with a 1,064 series (233, 194) and Carson Trenor with a 1,028 series (236, 193).
