Additional information was released by Illinois State Police regarding the fatal accident Tuesday that occurred on Interstate 80.
Illinois State Police District 17 troopers responded at 11:28 a.m. Tuesday to a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 80, just east of Utica.
Scott Veatch, 49, Goodfield, was westbound on Interstate 80 in a truck-tractor with semi-trailer and slowed his vehicle due to a traffic backup resulting from a vehicle fire further west on Interstate 80, according to information from a preliminary investigation. Suzanne Buntrock, 68, Woodridge, was also westbound on Interstate 80 in an SUV and slowed down behind Veatch.
Another driver in an SUV approached the scene and failed to slow down for the traffic buildup. That driver struck the left rear of Buntrock's vehicle and continued west striking the left rear of the trailer driven by Veatch. The driver's SUV came to a rest on the left shoulder of Interstate 80's westbound lanes and the driver died due to injuries sustained in the crash.
The driver has not yet been identified.
The accident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit and La Salle County Coroner's Office. The Utica Fire Department and ambulance also responded to the scene to handle extrication and medical treatment.
No citations have been issued.
