1 dead after crash near Matthiessen State Park

A 16-year-old from Chicago has been identified as the deceased driver following a car and semi-truck crash near Matthiessen State Park on Monday.

Oglesby Fire Department responded at 3:10 p.m. Monday to the crash on Route 178 at the south entrance to the park.

Oglesby Fire Chief Ron Popurella said the car was "broadsided" by the semi-truck at the intersection and the male driver of the vehicle was dead upon their arrival.

The La Salle County Coroner's Office announced the driver was a 16-year-old teenager from Chicago who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Coroner's Office at 4:47 p.m.

Illinois State Police are investigating the crash.

Another male and female passengers also were inside the vehicle. The female passenger had to be extricated by emergency personnel and was taken to Illinois Valley Community Hospital via Life Flight helicopter.

Oglesby Fire Department remained on scene until 5:30 p.m.

The La Salle County Coroner's Office said they will issue a press release this afternoon with information about the deceased.
