Excitement abounds for Sandwich golf programs in '19

Lady Indians return solid core; Indians looking to raise the bar

Sandwich boys and girls head golf coach Mike Butler begins his 15th season at the helm and feels this could be one of the most exciting seasons since he took over the programs.

The Lady Indians have nine ladies (six returning letterwinners) on the roster, including four who were Interstate Eight All-Conference members last season and two who were sectional qualifiers. The Indians also bring back six members, while adding a couple of newcomers, in a group that has some experience, but will need to keep improving as the season progresses.

"The girls, most of them have a lot of experience, we're just fine-tuning right now in practice," said Butler. "In a lot of ways they are a group that we can just send out on the course and let them go ... the top six girls are all returning from last season. Many of them are also in competitions outside the high school season, so they know what they need to work on and are also great with helping the younger girls as well.

"I feel the sky's the limit for the girls this season."

The Lady Indians have seniors Josie Gonzalez and Jillian Fuchs, each All-I8 members, sectional participants and picks for The Times Honor Roll; juniors Morgan Ross (All-I8), Hanna Reedy, Grace Donahue; sophomore Alijah Campbell (All-I8); and freshmen Zoey Geisheimer, Georgia Vehe and Melody Goldstein.

The Indians club will feature returnees in senior Dextor Wesson; juniors Aidan Sullivan, Ryan Pruski, Ethan Hall; sophomores Elliott Underhile, Michael Barbey as well as newcomers sophomore Sam Dawson and freshman Brice Harrison.

"The boys squad, six of the eight are returning and have some experience, so it will be curious to see how they progress," said Butler. "This is a group that is very open to the coaching we are giving them, but we still have a little way to go. We are seeing a lot of improvement and consistency from all the guys during these first couple of days of practice, and the work ethic has been really good.

"My hope is that effort translates to lower and lower scores as the season goes along."
