Ottawa High board moves to dismiss teacher based on performance

No misconduct in play

The Ottawa High School Board agreed Thursday morning to suspend tenured art teacher Anthony Alvarado without pay pending his dismissal for his performance related to the classroom.

The action does not involve any misconduct, said Superintendent Michael Cushing.

According to the resolution approved unanimously by the board Thursday, Alvarado was placed on a remediation plan April 5 for the time period between April 8 and Oct. 28, and he failed to complete the remediation plan with a rating equal to or better than a "proficient" rating.

Alvarado's failure to complete the remediation plan with a rating equal to or better than proficient was incompetent, negligent and not in the best interests of the school district, according to the resolution approved by the board.

Cushing said he didn't want to comment any further, because Alvarado may request a hearing regarding his dismissal within 17 days before a hearing officer.

The Times requested Thursday morning a notice of the charges against Alvarado, among other documents, through the Freedom of Information Act. The document was received and The Times will update the story with more information.
