An Illinois Valley family is raising money for their mother who’s battling spinal cancer.
“She’s so important to us,” said Elizabeth Keen, a La Salle resident and the daughter of Kay Keen of Peru, who was diagnosed with spinal cancer in 2017.
Kay Keen has been admitted to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.
Kay’s family, which includes six sons and five daughters, put together a fundraiser and upcoming benefit to help.
All the money raised will go toward their mother’s medical and living expenses, said Elizabeth Keen.
Kay has been denied Medicaid to pay for treatment and living expenses, the family said.
Keen’s daughters describe their mother as generous, strong, funny, reliable and caring.
“She’s just fun to be around,” said Elizabeth Keen, and said her childhood friends would describe her mother as being “sassy” and having a “big personality.”
The family grew up in La Salle, and Kay moved to Peru in 2010. Kay’s husband, Dennis, passed away in 1996.
Dennis and Kay Keen worked as bundle carriers for the NewsTribune in the 1980s and ’90s, the family said.
