La Salle woman died in Tuesday crash on I-80

Coroner released name

The motorist killed in Tuesday's crash on Interstate 80 has been identified as 32-year-old Chelsea B. Davis of La Salle, the La Salle County Coroner's Office announced Thursday.

The coroner and state police are continuing their investigation into the three-vehice crash reported at 11:28 a.m. Tuesday on I-80 just east of Utica.

Scott Veatch, 49, Goodfield, was westbound on Interstate 80 in a truck-tractor with semitrailer and slowed his vehicle due to a traffic backup resulting from a vehicle fire farther west on Interstate 80, according to information from a preliminary investigation. Suzanne Buntrock, 68, Woodridge, also was westbound on Interstate 80 in an SUV and slowed down behind Veatch.

Another driver in another SUV approached the scene and failed to slow down for the traffic buildup. That driver struck the left rear of Buntrock’s vehicle and continued west, striking the left rear of the trailer driven by Veatch. The driver’s SUV came to a rest on the left shoulder of Interstate 80’s westbound lanes and the driver died due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit and La Salle County Coroner’s Office. The Utica Fire Department and ambulance also responded to the scene to handle extrication and medical treatment.

No citations have been issued.
