OUTDOORS: Protect your rights at the polls, in the community

Motorcyclists used to have a bad image too

Evidently the Second Amendment is in danger as well due to the threat of the coronavirus.

Hundreds are flocking to gun shops across the country. It’s common knowledge that the anti-gun politicians are seeking to extinguish your right to protect yourself and your loved ones with the firearm of your choice.

It's another thing that the people who make the laws do not have the slightest knowledge of working firearms. Because large city folks lack knowledge as well, it is easy to convince them that they need more laws. These laws have never prevented a crime from being committed, nor have they ever been a tool to solve any crime.

The gun buy-back that Chicago has used to get guns off the streets has a clause: “No questions asked if a gun is turned in.” Many perpetrators can now commit a crime with a firearm, turn it in to “gun buy-back” and never have to answer for that crime. They will also receive a fee for turning the gun in. Are we missing something here?

This is one example of the knowledge of some lawmakers in our country. I guess the worst-case scenario is the news media has projected such a dark image for those that hunt or target shoot that many are dropping out. The state is concerned right now that hunting license sales are down, and they will continue to decline as this image is continued to destroy us.

It used to be that motorcyclists had a bad image. They finally fought back, getting rid of the helmet law, and their strength in numbers has patched up their image. Even the outlaw bikers cannot tarnish their image, as many are doing good services to communities. This is what we as hunters, gun enthusiasts and target shooters need to do as well.

First of all, go to the polls and vote out these anti-gun politicians and support those who honor our Second Amendment. A vote for President Trump is a good start.

Hunting report

Despite the large number of coyote taken during the hunting and trapping seasons, they are still doing quite well. The very large fees paid for coyote put many hunters and trappers after them.

Soon the 2020 wild turkey season will be upon us. Personally, I have scouted most of the areas I am allowed to hunt on. I have not seen a bird on any of them. Others reassured me that here are plenty of birds in La Salle County. Most must be hiding, at least from me.

Fishing report

The continued rain and snow moisture has river systems still stained, and with cold water. This condition is very bad for angling. A very flashy lead-head jig disappears in only three inches of water.

All cooling lakes continue to remain closed until further notice. This is really bad as well.
