WRITE TEAM: Jesus keeps going, even if you shoot him

Jesus had been shot. The camera man panned over the mural of Jesus to reveal the bullet holes splattering the art to smithereens. The news story was broadcasting an update on a 9-year-old girl from Iraq named Myriam. Myriam’s town, Qaraqosh, had been invaded in 2014. She gave her first-hand account from a refugee camp of how ISIS had destroyed everything dear to her.

Tell us how you feel about ISIS," The reporter asked Myriam. She replied,“I will pray for them and forgive them.” The town’s Christians had been driven out. The churches had been demolished. Jesus was shot in a display of extreme hate and it didn’t stop Him.

Jesus keeps going.

I scrolled to read an Instagram post of a "famous" Christian who had decided that Jesus was just a little too hard core for him. “I’m opting to keep my heart open in the future to practicing a different kind of faith,” he wrote. I wondered about his followers. I imagined their shock, some tears, a lot of anger, an avalanche of media flurry and then in the end ... Jesus keeps going.

I took all these thoughts to the office of the mission board where I work and sometime during the afternoon they boiled over into inspiring conversation with staff. Our talk is sealed forever in my mind because we discussed the concept of Jesus being unstoppable. Little did we know that in just a few days we would be challenged to believe this like never before.

“Shari. It’s worse than I could have imagined. Total 15 fatalities. Twelve of them are Bolivian MedFund volunteers." I had awoken in the middle of the night to my phone lighting up with messages. Instantly I wanted to be sick. This was the same medical team of doctors I had fallen asleep praying for. When the sun came up nothing felt the same. The news from our Bolivia missionaries was devastating. The worst thing we could have imagined as a mission board had indeed taken place. One of our missionaries had lost his team to an accident. As director of communications I knew there would be a barrage of questions, namely, “Why would God let this happen to such good people?” I knew doubt would try to overwhelm, and it did.

That was one year ago. Today, the mission has only intensified its outreach. More doctors volunteered with MedFund for short-term medical service than ever before. During the COVID-19 crisis MedFund is on the front line serving in the hardest places. After all was said and done, It was true, Jesus keeps going.

Nothing can stop JESUS. Not Isis, not betrayal, not the loss of an entire mission team, not even doubt. Jesus keeps going.

He continues through hate. He moves past our opinions of Him. We learned through the Church in China that even if you make Him illegal it only multiplies His message of love to a nation. JESUS KEEPS GOING, even if you shoot Him.
