The Tri-DENT Drug Task Force said it seized a "very large amount" of money totaling in the millions Tuesday following a traffic stop of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 80 near mile post 54 in Bureau County.
After the driver's paperwork yielded some discrepancies, the task force deployed its K9 around the tractor-trailer to conduct a free air sniff, the task force said. Drug agents said the K9 indicated the odor of narcotics and agents conducted a search of the vehicle and its freight.
Located in the trailer were several storage cases and other containment items that did not beling with the encolosed freight, agents said. Agents searched those items and discovered the money.
After an investigation of the driver, passenger and freight from California, along with the assistance of the Bureau County State's Attorney's Office, it was determined to release them with a notice of forfeiture.
The investigation continues, including the possibility of pending charges on the driver and/or passenger, according to drug agents.
Tri-DENT said it will release more information pending the investigation.
